Girona's astonishing entry in La Liga!!!!
This is a success story of a football club in Catalonia, Spain. Not many of you have heard about Girona Futbol Club, but you will remember this club for a glorious first season in one of the Europe's top five leagues.
After finishing as runners up to Levante in the second division in 2016-17 season, Girona were promoted to La Liga for the first time in 87 years of club's existence. This was just the start of a prosperous season for the club with a stadium of capacity of less than 14000. Girona defeated the mighty Manchester City in a Club friendly before the start of the season by 1 goal to nil.
Girona had to face Atletico Madrid in their first game in La Liga. They grab the oppurtunity with both hands. The match ended in a 2-2 draw but the truth was Girona dominated the game. They were leading 2-0 until the 76th minute then Atletico managed to score 2 goals to earn themselves a draw. This was just a start to an emphatic season.
When they faced Barcelona, they lost three goals to nil at home. Barcelona only managed to score a singal goal the other two were own goals. Girona showed their hunger to defeat bigger teams and determination to fight. Nearly, a month later they faced the mighty Real Madrid. They won 2-1. This was the first encounter between the two sides and Girona were able to draw first blood. This victory meant a lot to the fans of the club as Estadi Montilivi erupted after the win.
Since then Girona were not taken lightly by any other team in the league. They have won 13 games and draw 9. Currently they are at 9th position in the league table. They must be eyeing to win the remainder of the matches and finish as high of the table as they can.
Cristhian Stuani the Uruguayan forward has scored 19 goals in the league campaign. He has scored more goals than Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale and is on level terms with Antoine Griezmann. Cristian Portu has been the star midfielder for them this season. He has netted 11 times this season. Alex Garnell has been another sensation as he has provided 7 assists this season.
Girona must be looking forward to the coming season. They have learned to fight fire with fire. Next season they must look forward to make a top 4 or top 6 finish and enter the world of European competition.
